Corn in the backyard 2009, weeks 20 & 21

Even though the weather continues to be wet and cool, the cornstalks continue to dry out, and we trust the kernels keep drying too. There hasn't been a lot of harvesting in our area, which is a good indication of how slowly the crops are drying out this year. Stay tuned...!

  1. The corn 'round here isn't dry enough for harvesting yet either.. I am painfully aware of this fact as I am dying for some cornstalks to decorate my front porch and am promised some by the young farmer friend of my oldest girls. But I have to wait until he harvests... and he hasn't done that yet. Everyone else has their fall decorating done, complete with pumpkins and cornstalks and yet my front porch is bare yet. Ohhh, I am so embarrassed;)

Here is a question for you... do you know why they must wait for the corn to dry out before harvesting? I would think they would want to do it when the corn is all moist and fresh... inquiring minds and all that, you know☺

  3. We pity you and your embarrassing situation, Diane. I would offer some of our cornstalks, but they're pretty mangled at this point.

I'm not a farmer, but I believe the grain may spoil if it is stored too long in a high moisture condition. I understand that corn can be too dry also, which probably means that those processors that need a higher oil or moisture content for their products wouldn't be interested in buying the overly dry corn.

dlr -- you saw the one pictured here: http://threethingsverydullindeed.blogspot.com/2009/10/harvest.html
