Corn in the backyard 2009, week 17

September 13

In just one week there is noticeable drying in the husks of the ear, and those kernels that are visible look very good. I haven't noticed anyone harvesting corn yet in our neighborhood, which is very late for these parts. Thanks for visiting!

I guess they really ARE in England...

Karen and Lily left for a tour of England last Thursday, joined by about 20 other ladies from an internet sewing forum they all frequent. We haven't heard a peep from our ladies in more than three days, but today we have evidence that they really are in London.

See the royal blue duffel at the bottom of the photo? That's Lily's bag. And the navy blue suitcase standing up at the far right? That's Karen's. At least their bags made it to England!

Here's the group across the street from the Albert Memorial, although it appears that Karen (in the center of the group) is more interested in the ornate building on the left.

This is evidently St. Paul's Cathedral, and that's Lily in the green dress and white sweater in the middle. The girls had arrived in London at 1:00 AM our time, and proceeded on this two-hour tour of London before they were allowed to settle into their hotel about six hours after arrival.

This photo was taken on Saturday, their second day in London. This shot of the group was taken in the Globe Theater during their tour of the facility and the costume collection used by the actors. Lily is in the front row, and Karen is in the back.

Fortunately for us, some of their tour companions are blogging during the tour, so we have some reassurance that our ladies actually made it, and appear to be enjoying themselves. Thanks for visiting!

Construction update #33

The red paint is now complete on all the siding, although as you can tell from the photo, I'm not sure if the red painting is done on the doors. We still have some trim boards that need to be painted white before we mount them, so we plan to mount the trim on the east side of the barn before we decide if the car doors will be all white or partially red.

Once the trim is in place we'll survey our viewers to see which door configuration is preferred. Until then, thanks for visiting!

Corn in the backyard 2009, week 16

September 6

The top photo shows evidence that the corn is beginning to dry, even if it is not as obvious in the bottom photo. In most years, some farmers are already starting to harvest on Labor Day weekend, but not this year. In fact, it's hard to find a field that is anywhere close to being ready. Count on us to keep you posted on harvesting progress right here on our blog. Thanks for visiting!

Cutest Lemonade Stand in the State

A few weeks back our entrepreneurial neighbors set up their lemonade stand to glean business from the traffic going to and from a tractor show next to their property. The lemonade was refreshing, and the servers were as congenial as they are cute. Thanks for visiting!
